Our Roots Grow Deep
In May 1881, a committee of three ministers from the Greenbrier Presbytery was appointed to organize a Presbyterian church in Barboursville, according to the request of the thirteen petitioners. The Barboursville Presbyterian Church was organized on June 4, 1881. Three Elders elected were: James E. Erwin, James I. Kuhn (Clerk of Session), and Alexander P. Leist. Both preaching services and Sunday school classes were held at the M. E. Church building.
In April of 1886, the Session of the church requested that it be dissolved due to loss of members and difficulty procuring a suitable place of worship. On September 22, 1914, at the meeting of the Kanawha Presbytery a petition was presented requesting that a Presbyterian church be established in Barboursville. A commission met with a group of eleven on November 16, 1914, and the church was organized. These eleven charter members were: H. M. White, Mrs. H. M. White, F. I. Updyke, Benjamin L. Hume, Mrs. B. L. Hume, Mrs. P. A. Vallandingham, Mrs. Valentine (Elizabeth) Leist, Miss Dona Cyrus, W. S. Spencer, Mrs. W. S. Spencer, and Harry Nosburn.
In 1925 a new chapel was built on Main Street on land given to the church by Mrs. Amanda Kuhn, wife of James I. Kuhn, Clerk of Session of the original Barboursville Presbyterian Church. A Sunday school room expansion was completed in 1955 and a new sanctuary was dedicated in 1970.
